On Feb. 8th, 2012, I was treated for a heart attack, received a pacemaker, and a stent. I started hiking 77 days later.
I left the southern border on Apr. 26th, 2012, hitting the trail with a grand total of 32 miles hiking experience,
(if I don’t count the time I went down into the bottom of the Grand Canyon, at the ripe old age of 15, in 1972).
On Oct. 7th, 2012, I stood on top of Mt. Whitney, a whopping 41 lbs. lighter.
I ate anything and everything that I could get my hands on, especially relying on hiker boxes along the way.
I would have loved to have had a gourmet diet fueling me the whole way, but I didn’t.
I chose to wing it, and take/find whatever food I could obtain along the way, as I made my way north.
I also happened to tear my tibial posterior tendon on day 3, just a few dozen miles north of the southern border.
I kept hiking, not knowing what the constant pain meant.
I hiked again this year with the torn tendon and a similar dietary plan of foraging in establishments along the way.
I also tore the blood vessel attached to my testicle, and had to exit the trail and seek help from a hospital.
I also contracted giardia, laying over at VVR, doing the dishes for 12 hours a day until I got better.
I did a modest 520 miles this year (2013).
The list of food that I posted up-list, would have looked pretty good on any number of days while I was out on the trail.
Is it junk and garbage? Sounds like it is according to you?
I’m pretty sure that if I ate over 8,000 calories of junk and garbage, I would make it far enough to enjoy the next day’s menu.
A vegan gave me several of her food items, one of which had a 400 calorie per ounce value. Awesome bang for the buck.
Was that something that I found along the trail? Not so much.
