We were just talking about the fact that there is no snow here. You could leave from the border right now and hike as far as the Sierras. Watch the weather and snow levels. There could be a later dump of snow. I started in my thru in a low snow year April 18th But, on a MYTH years later on about April 15th I got snowed out in the San Gabriel's You never know.
Get Yogi's book and trust her about food resupply. The only place I saw more food than she mentions is at Northern Kennedy Meadows. Pretty good store now.
You can always start early and hitch back to the KO. Great idea is you want to be ahead of the crowd. Also means you would get through the desert when it's cooler. Many people will be picking up hikers between the border and Hwy 10 and returning them to the trail.
Bugs drive me crazy. I tried a tarp and went back to a tent. Oregon breeds Mosquitos Sierras have their share of them too For me-- if I can't sleep I can't hike. Marmot
