Not sure how these replies work, but hopefully the intended people will see
it.

I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to respond with
information and advice. I got the information I was looking for and the
motivation that I will need, and now feel more comfortable about my
upcoming hike. This is a nice resource made up of a pretty neat community,
thanks.
