I follow the "rules" that Scott Williamson uses, which I feel is a good way
to approach it. This keeps the new records similar to old ones in regards
to how they are completed so as to minimize possible arguments down the
road. Everyone has their interpretation to what is self-supported or
unsupported is, which means lots of grey area, however I think a good
explanation is found on the FKT PCT page.
"
The PCT is usually done in typical thru-hiker style, which we would
classify as "self-supported" -- rather than having a dedicated support
crew, the hiker may use mail drops, facillities in towns along the way, and
the kindness of strangers. Technically, any pre-arranged support such as
friends meeting you along the trail with supplies would be considered
"supported". Scott Williamson and Joe Kisner previously held the record for
the fastest thru-hiker-style (which they call "unassisted") "
More specifically I agree with Yogi, if its not planned food and is there
for everyone, its fair game. Pre arranged is a no no, but theres a little
lee way. I read somewhere that when Williamson met his wife at Donner Pass
near their home during one record hike, she brought a Pizza... Im sure it
wasn't pre-planned and he would have shared with other hikers, but its in
the grey area. It'd mainly be a problem if they were bringing you a
resupply. When it all comes down to it, its all about what you feel is
right and according to the rules. No one is going to watch you, and the
honor system is king.
