This is a good article explaining the major players in the US market and the differnces between phones. As an example someone mentioned Verizon, which is CDMA, so your phone probably wouldn't work on their network.. not only because of the differnces in GSM/CDMA but because these phones are custom built not to work... making us all having to buy a new phone or stay in a contract (which some companies are now trying to change)
