Hi Kristy,
I would think that in asking a stranger to do us a favor, it would be the most polite thing to contact them as soon as your plans allow. If necessary, contact the trail angel again, just before arriving at your destination as discussed in your first contact, be it phone or email.
Just my thoughts.
