Half Dome is more than 10 miles off the PCT (I don't have the exact distance), but is a great summit to reach.

Others:
Mt. San Jacinto                            -Soutern CA, can be out-and back or an alternate route

Mt. Whitney

Benson Lake                            -in Yosemite N.P.

The Sierra Buttes                    -just north of the town of Sierra City, it makes for a HUGE climb from HWY 49 up to the lookout

Rainbow Falls                        -in Devil's Postpile National Monument, near Mammoth Moutain

Devil's Postpile                        -only short hike to see some basalt rock formations (6-7 sided basalt) stacked                                              in straight columns with many fallen over in pieces

Crater Lakes's The Watchman Llokout tower

Mt. Thielsen                              -Southern Oregon, very steep climb, with the last 50'ish feet a class 4 scramble, very exposed (a fall could mean a drop of hundreds of feet), only do if you are comfortable with climbing/heights

Ramona Falls                            -west side of Mt. Hood, can be an out-and-back or an alternative route

The Eagle Creek to Tunnel Falls alternative

Old Snowy Mtn                    -Southern WA's Goat Rocks, short distance off trail, and there's a one-person camp site on the mountain's summit

Mt. Daniel                            -Central WA's Alpine Lakes Wilderness

Lyman Lake                        -Northern WA, just past Suiattle Pass

Subject: [pct-l] side trips

Hi guys

I was wondering what notable/worthy sidetrips there are off the trail (no more than 10 miles from the trail). For example half dome in Yosemite is just a few miles off the trail and is one of the best sights in the park. Passing it up would be a shame when you're so close. What other detours are worth setting foot off the trail to take a look?
