[pct-l] cell phone/internet coverage and apps for Windows phone

I was wondering if anyone could comment on cell phone and internet coverage
on the PCT.  I found the link below from Halfmile, which appears that
coverage for AT&T is pretty good in general.  I am considering getting a
cheap Verizon phone with a pre-paid plan and suspending my AT&T plan if
Verizon coverage is significantly better.  From the Halfmile link it
appears AT&T actually has better coverage than Verizon which I find hard to
believe.  My mom will be happier if she knows that I have reception a fair
amount of the time, and I would also like to be able to call her if I need
new shoes or something not in one of our pre-planned re-supply boxes (even
at 31 I still need my mommy).  I am also considering keeping a blog
including updates on current water/snow conditions, gear reviews, and also
so my family and friends can track our progress.

Also, is there anyone else out there with a Windows phone that can suggest
a good app for maps?  Googlemaps isn't even compatible with Windows phones,
and none of the apps others have recommended for iPhone or Android are
compatible either.  I have the Samsung Focus Flash.
