And what did they try to steer you towards? Giant heavy boots?  
Because I've hiked the JMT section in trail running shoes and Chaco  
sandals. The trail runners were fine for when there still was  
significant snow and the Chacos were fine when I did a section of the  
JMT in August when there was only a little snow left.
