I don't think there's enough money in the world to make me do trail support for anyone else, though I did do trail support for two friends (a couple) on the AT last year. (They didn't finish.due to injuries)
Oh, yeah, and every shipment to Jon contained a batch of homemade brownies or bars (which he ate as breakfast) and a folded note for every night that shipment would cover.
Worst call from Jon on the PCT in 1997: His opening sentence wasn't "I miss you" or "I love you." Or anything so sentimental or sweet. Not even "How are you?" No. It was about 4 months into his thru hike and I was relatively new to trail support and longing for some sweet words. Right off the bat he said, "Don't send any more 6 ounce cans of tuna." I'm not 100% sure, but I think I hung up the phone. When he called back I'm pretty sure I told him where to place the 6 ounce cans of tuna.
Best advice to thru-hikers: be sweet to that trail support person.
Joan

Joan,
So great to hear your experiences. Love the sage advice for those left on the home front. I burst out laughing every time I imagine your (1997 - PCT)pre-hike preparation. That is just hilarious, although I am sure it wasn't so funny at the time ...
