Hey all! For those of you preparing to embark on a thru-hike this year and
are thinking about bringing an MP3 player I thought throw in my own two
cents. I used a Cowon J3 on my hike. It's a light, sturdy, mp3 player
that can also play video although I used it primarily for my audiobooks.
It can take a miniSD card- I used a 32 GB card in mine on which I loaded
over 900 hrs of audio.
The best thing about it is that it has about 60 hours of battery life! I
listened to mine sometimes 8-10 hrs a day everyday between resupply and
never ran out of juice. No, I'm not an official Cowon spokesperson but I
have to say I grew really attached to mine. I dropped it in a puddle about
a week from the Canadian border and was totally shattered when it wouldn't
turn back on. However when I plugged it in to a wall socket at Stehekin it
came back to life! I'm not sure I would've made it to Canada without
those audiobooks to be honest.
I believe Cowon has models other models out now then have even longer
battery life but the 60 hours was plenty for me.
