Bishop is a tough hike out. Leave PCT near where Piute Creek joins San Juaquin River, ~11S 3937,350E, 4, 121,400 N, Elev 8,100, then 11 miles to Piute Pass, Elev 11,400 ft; then downhill 4 miles to North Lake road, Then about 22 miles to Bishop.
Lots of fishermen using this road in the summer time, so hitching should be no problem. Bishop has many fine sportsing stores and large supermarket(Von's) for resupply.
Lone Pine is probably better as far as closness to PCT. Leave PCT at Mulkey Pas (or Trial Pass, a little further west), ~11S 395,400E, 4,032,200N, Elev 10,400; Short downhill 2 mile hike to Horseshoe Meadows.Elev 9,800; then hitchhike to Lone pine 24 miles, Elev 3,700. Not many big grocery stores (just Joseph's), and I don't know about sporting goods stores, just pass through every two weeks. Not much traffic on Horseshoe Meadows road except for fellow backpackers and pack station personnel. There is car camping at Horseshoe meadows, so maybe on of those campers would give you a ride. There is also shuttel services like Sierra Shuttel. Check the internet.
Independence is near the bottom of Kearsarge pass. Not much traffice to/from the trailhead at Onion Valley. (I think about 11 miles from Onion Valley to town). Some campers. Not much in town of Independence to buy supplies. The hike back, up Kearsarge Pass is ad in the morning. exposed east facing the sun for most of the hike.

Trying to decide which of these three towns makes the most sense in terms
of ease of hitching, timing, ease of hitching, services, ease of hitching,
niceness of in-town lodgings, ease of hitching, etc., via Kearsage Pass,
and would certainly appreciate any feedback or thoughts on which options
people have chosen and how they turned out and all that....

Did I mention that ease of hitching is a priority...?

Thanks!
