[pct-l] Independence vs. Lone Pine vs Bishop for Resupply

Crossing Kearsarge Pass dumps you out at Onion Valley campground. It's an
easy hitch down to Independence, which has almost nothing. The two gas
station minimarts are only marginally stocked.

Most cars headed down are going home through either Bishop or Lone Pine, so
your question may be decided for you. You can completely resupply either
place. From Independence, you can also hitch or take the local bus either
north to Bishop or south to Lone Pine. Of those two, I'd say definitely Lone
Pine; much more hiker-friendly, great eateries, good stores, including a
small outfitter. The Mt Whitney Hostel on Hwy 395 is clean, cheap, and loves
hikers. Pizza across the street. Walk to P.O. or anywhere else in town.

Getting back to the trail is always harder than getting to town. Do not even
think of walking that road from Independence to Onion Valley; you'll fry -
or get hit. Be prepared to stand out in the open beside the road for quite a
while waiting for a ride back up to the campground. An umbrella will help
keep that sun off of you.
