[pct-l] Trail runners vs hiking boots

Try a hybrid of both.

The boots are an overkill but I have found that the wimpy sole of a trail
runner is just not adequate.  You are stabbing your foot with sharp rocks a
million times a day and after 2 weeks the bottom of your foot will feel
bruised and extremely sore!  I have found that a nice firm sole and insole
will prevent you from feeling that.  When you step on a rock, the sole
should be firm enough not to give in and deliver that to your foot.  You
should not even perceive that you are stepping on a rock.

I am just now reading Piper's book, *Piper's Flight* (a good book, btw,
some people just have a gift for storytelling) and she gives a very clear
description of how your feet will feel after 1500 miles (and way before) in
the soft flimsy sole of a trail runner.  I don't like high tops, I prefer
low top hikers with gators and a firm insole with some cushioning.  The
cushioning is not as important as a firm sole, however.  The extra few
ounces on your foot is worth it!!!!

Your shoes are the most important piece of equipment!  If you can't walk on
those 2 feet, the rest of your gear won't matter!
