One more thought on hitching..
ALWAYS keep your hiker "wallet" on your person while hitching.
Make it part of your routine. Fix your shirt, take off your sunglasses, dust yourself off a bit, Remove your wallet from your pack, then make the hitch.

Maybe this sounds paranoid.. it isn't supposed to.
I advise trust, it's one of the most beautiful parts of the trail meeting all these great people.
Trust.. just not Ridiculous trust.
