[pct-l] Fw: Permanent Campfire Ban on PCT?

Hi Thatcher,

I did not know about that stove. What is the brand name?  What does it weigh compared to a Jetboil. I understand that the alcohol flame can become visable if you add salt. That you can save unused fuel in the burner is a big advantage over the soda can stoves. I would like to compare it weight and efficency wise to my Jetboil. How much liquid fuel (weight) would you have to carry to be able to cook two meals/day as I can with the Jetboil?

Thanks for your post.

hi mendorider,
i will disagree with you about some alcohol stoves. i agree with you on the super light cat stoves. the alcohol stove that i carry is a clik stove support with a trangia burner. it's very stable and you can simmer with it. you can also smother the flame as well carry any unused fuel in the burner until you need it.

Hi Deems,

You are mistaken. I respectfully disagree. Alcohol stoves are not  "the same risk as any stove".  Those extremely light weight soda can stoves are much more likely to be blown over by a sudden, and unexpected, gust of wind. This has happened more than once - as reported on the PCT-L. And, the flame is invisible and cannot be turned off - no valve. You can't simmer. It is much safer to use a canister stove. The Jetboil is very light weight and more fuel efficient than alcohol stoves - you only use as much fuel as you need. Cooking two meals/day the larger canister lasts me a week - and it only weighs 13 ounces. Please don't risk burning down any of the PCT. I know, those who are very experienced and careful use them successfully. I'm most concerned that they might, and do, influence new hikers who aspire to do the PCT.
