Make the author's name David Miller. After self-publishing his book he has
published others about hiking. And he remains very active in the AT hiking
community.

Jesse:
I just read a book that may help you with the relationship stuff--"AWOL
on the Appalachian Trail" by David Martin. His dream was to thru hike
the AT. His wife took care of two girls while he was gone. He
incorporated them into his hike along the way. His wife and one girl
climbed Katahdin with him at the end of his trip. Although they seemed
to support his hike, there were times toward the end of it that they
felt bad about it. He got their support by really letting them know that
this was his dream and they wanted to support that idea because they
loved him. The girls were proud of their dad finishing the trail. He
also wrote an ongoing series of articles about his hike at a local
newspaper.
As far as his job situation--he quit his software job, but was able to
unexpectedly get re-hired at the end of the hike. The company did not
want to let him go, but after he was gone for 5 months they still needed
someone with his job skills.
Good luck,
--Fireweed
