[pct-l] Ultralight as a must?

Hi everyone

I'm not a native english speaker, so please be forgiving regarding my
english skills.
I cannot assess the formula for its correctness, but it's clear that it is
only valid for a walk with no subtantial ascents. When ascending, the
amount of energy used is at least linear to the total weight, meaning
bodyweight+packweight. From my experience, I have developed a rule about
how fast i can hike uphill. With a light daypack, this is about 2000 feet
in altitude gain, given i am not constrained by hiking speed (--> the path
is steep). With a pack of about 20 pounds, i can only do about 1700 feet.
I often hike in the swiss alps, and this rule of thumb has quite some
relevance for me in assesing the time needed for a particular hike.

I dont want to suggest anything. I haven't hiked the PCT. Just take this
into consideration.
