Barry, I beg to differ. I am a 71 year old female hiker and quite proud of the fact that I finished the PCT a week before I was  71. (section hiker, not a thru) I did over 800 miles on the CDT this year too. I have passed the time I could brag about being fast but take great delight in being an old lady on the trail - slow but still there. It is not necessary to buy into the cult of being always young. I am enjoying life greatly at 71.
