Hi, Alicia. A biologist gave me a ride back to the trail near Chester, and warned me about the toads that make a loud, bear-ish call up on the Hat Creek Rim. Sure enough, we night hiked that section and were serenaded with their awkward grunts. Perhaps that would explain it? Best, Liz.
