One summer I had soreness develop on the side of my knee after
backpacking for a few weeks. I found that loosening my waist strap
allowed my hips to move more freely and it actually helped the knee
soreness. When I would feel the pain coming on in my knee, I would
loosen my waist belt on my pack. This helped, I think becasue it allowed
my hips to move more freely and so absorb some of the impact that would
go to the knee. I was really conscious of my walking gait--how I would
hold my feet and legs and my stride. The pain finally went away and I
haven't been bothered by it since.
