My experience is trekking/climbing in the Alps, and that was what I
was referring to.
Rescues at sea, etc, don't really apply to a hiking forum like this
If you get rescued in Switzerland, expect to pay lots. France, maybe,
depending on where you are, and since you don't know, many (if not
most) folks carry insurance.
The point is, who pays? The rescue-e or the rescuer, which in the US
is usually the taxpayer? if the rescue needs support that the local
SAR team doesn't have.
