[pct-l] Ride Advice from Timberline Lodge to Portland?

Good morning, Roger,

I agree with Irish: There’s quite a bit of traffic from the Portland area
to Timberline, year-round. One reason, Timberline – supposedly – is the
only place in N. America where one can ski/board year around. Many young
slat-riders and board-heads hitch up the mountain and back. I live in
Sandy at the end of the public transportation and often see thumbs in the
air on Rt. 26 at the east edge of town.

>From my experience, it’s easiest to get a ride from a place where the
people are stopped and on the ground, like in a parking lot or outside a
business, compared to just hitching along the highway. It’s much easier to
approach people and begin a conversation if they aren’t whizzing by at
highway speed. People feel much safer when approached that way, and it’s
amazing how many travelers are really curious about PCT hikers.

It's also possible to ask about a ride inside the l0dge. Timberline staff
people travel up and down the mountain every day, and are mostly young, and
outdoor oriented.

Enjoy your hike,
