Thanx for the update.

Went down to the loco Walmart yesterday and bought one. Now to study the manual so I can operate it. :-(

Tried using my iPod touch and it is so so for the purpose.

Typed on my iPad.

I did have one that got washed, but recovered after 2 days of drying out; on the other hand, I dropped one onto dirt, and something mechanical inside broke.
> My Sony ICD-PX312, other models poss available, (~50-60 $ @ Best Buy; poss less online) is far better, with essentially none of the above problems. It has multiple tracks, so one can talk about other things while walking (just don't forget which track you're talking to); it has gobs of memory, especially with a microSD card - 2GB internal and 2GB on my uSD card, which is probably several months of hike journaling. The files are MP3, and can be downloaded onto a computer for writing up a journal (I'm tempted to try some voice recognition software). Like digital cameras, they are more sophisticated, with several record settings to decide on, and one can do a lot of other things with the recorded tracks.
> Some of you may be saying, "Get to the point; what does it weigh?": 2.5 oz w/2 lithium AAA batteries, significantly less than my old microcassette. Being digital, the batteries last longer also.
