Personally, I've used a cheap Campmor rain jacket/pants setup for the JMT (in 2009) and Southern California (in 2010, 2011), and been both happy and sad with it. It's not UL, but I would use both pieces again after treating them with more water repellant for my next future hike. I have had to add some waterproof patches to the rain pants to fix holes that occurred during High Sierra snow hikes, but they are minor repairs.
