Not all of these replies were cc to the pct-l. So here they are, names withheld to protect the innocent.

Does a new Marmot Precip need seam-sealing? If so, with what product? Bob Riess, San Diego

           * No.

           * Others' experiences may vary, but my Precip bought in 2008 was
not waterproof at all. I replaced it with a Paclite material
jacket (my choice was Arcteryx) that has performed very well.
I understand that washing and drying some materials improves
their water resistance.
I would look for a jacket whose manufacturer states how it
performs to a standard test. See

            * Nah, it's ready to go. No seam-sealing required. That's a very popular jacket for thru-hikers!

            * Do NOT get a marmot precip unless you want to get wet. Ours soaked through last year within about 10 minutes of heavy rain, which we had quite a bit of in Oregon. I considered this product a total waste of money.

Seems to be a divergence of experiences and opinions. Be that as it may, I have placed orders for the Marmot Precip and the Marmot DriClime wind shirt. Maybe I’ll carry an umbrella. BR
