Correction on the age of the Wilderness Press guides.

I bought a complete set last year when rumors circulated that the publishers were going to discontinue the guides. I bought the 6th edition January 2003 guides. These are great and are are much improved from the 2nd edition my hiking pals and I used extensively, along with topographic maps and a compass, on our 1980 hike. Technology has changed and so has the size of the herd. There are a lot of great resources available today. What hasn't changed is the need for common sense. My advice to technology-dependent hikers: think about what you would do if your electronics were rendered unusable for something as unforseen as a drop into a river. Do not allow for a single point of failure.

Good luck to the class of 2012. HYOH.

> In your case Shelly, I’d very strongly suggest the Wilderness Press Guide Books. I would also add anything else that will give you up dates to trail closures, re-routes, etc. The Guide books have not been up dated since the 90’s and an awful lot has changed in southern CA and WA. But they have exactly what you were talking about: geology, side trails, escape routes, zoology, flora and fauna. Good luck; you’ll de great.
