In your case Shelly, I’d very strongly suggest the Wilderness Press Guide Books. I would also add anything else that will give you up dates to trail closures, re-routes, etc. The Guide books have not been up dated since the 90’s and an awful lot has changed in southern CA and WA.  But they have exactly what you were talking about: geology, side trails, escape routes, zoology, flora and fauna. Good luck; you’ll de great.
