Look at it this way, Heather. If Ray Jardine had ridden a motocross bike on the PCT and then claimed a speed record, hikers would feel the same way about him that climbers do about him chiseling holds in El Capitan. To a climber, artificially altering the rock in order to make an ascent is like kicking a little old lady and stealing her purse. It's worse than cheating, it is despicable.
