If nothing opens up in Old Station you can leave your car at my residence in Redding and I could pick you guys up there and bring you back to your car...

Yes, Treerings,
But what if they do catch me?.....I'm not as fast as I used to
be.....they'll have their way with me.
Yogi is pretty fast....not as fast as I am, but she is getting faster
faster and I am slowing down.

What if Yogi catches me???

Besides, I never had my hips replaced....I can still wiggle them as good
as ever.
It's the shoulders that I trashed (needed reconstructive surgeries)
during some high speed ski crashes.

You're better looking and have more modern hip replacements than they.

They'll never catch you!

Diane,
If you follow the following rules you will be meet all the basic
trail etiquette.

Be nice to Switchback&  Reinhold.

Respect your elder.

Do not get mad at Switchback if he raids and plunders you in the
middle of the night...it's not his fault...he can't help it.

Accept Yoshi's offer to share a cup of coffee on the trail.

Be nice to dogs on the trail.

If you meet a "Heavy Trucker" on the trail, struggling under his
heavy load, offer to carry some of his gear.

And yes, share your Snickers bars with Switchback&  Reinhold and
comfort them when they are in distress.

Yes,
Switchback,....the  "Hard-Core"  hiker....turned  "Hard-Core"  biker.
Say, will long suffering Mrs. Switchback accompany you on this mind
boggling journey?

If the answer is YES,  may I suggest you do this on one of those
"German World War II Military Sidewinders"?
You know, the 3 wheel motorcycle with the sidecar attached to one side.
Mrs. Switchback would be much more comfortable in the sidecar than
hanging on to you on the back seat.

May I further suggest that for your and Mrs. Switchback's protection you
both wear the  "German Military World War II Spiked Helmets"  and the
Field Marshall Rommel goggles?
You and Mrs. Switchback will look so Cooool.
But hey,.....you have to live up to that that  "Hard-Core"  hiker
reputation.

BTW....Bikers have a tendency to use their helmets to sit on....may I
suggest you not do that?

It was my experience that the Wilderness rangers tended to be the
types with Forestry degrees from Humbolt State who really resented
having to carry a heavy gun in their packs.

The LEO rangers in The Valley tended to be former Marine MPs

Hear! Hear! JoAnn and her husband, Emory, are two of THE nicest people. They go out of their way to help and have a wonderful home with a breathtaking view of Mt Shasta from their back yard. Oh, and I completely agree with JoAnn, this list is not the place for fowl language. If you can't keep it clean here, you've been in your cabin too long. Treat people kindly and you're likely to get the same back.

It?s the time of year I advise that there is at least some help here in northern
CA. I live in Lake Shasta which is about 17 north of Mt. Shasta. I can access
the PCT at Castle Crags; Scott Mt. Summit; Seiad Valley and occasionally
Callahan?s. My husband and I are always willing to help primarily section hikers
who need to be taken to/from a TH . . .

Uh Oh,  I had to go and mess with a Trail Angel.  Like I said, I had

Well, knowing Jackass and loving his writing and intellect in general, it
just wouldn't be right without all those four letter words.  As an "old
vet" who is getting more grizzled by the day, and spent a career working
with felons, those words have been a part of my life for a long time.  I
certainly try to contain them in church or around folks I know might not
appreciate them, but when reading something from Jackass, it's just part of
the flavor of a wonderful guy whose got some great stories to tell.  But
beware, he might say something even worse than those four letter words.
It's usually something really pithy and worth wading through the rough to
hear, however.

Anybody who calls a visit to City Lights Books a pilgrimage is good by me.

Janette et al,
You're right a really funny story, made even better when I remember that
all three of the principal 'characters' came thru the Hideaway....  Never
saw a Snake tho...maybe his feet failed him.  ;-)
Thank you, Jackass, Molasses and Yogi Beer....for the memories.

wanted to sent it, just did a re-read and I'm still mad, so here it goes.
An Open Letter to Lenny the Little:
Lenny,
Anyone who has read this list or hiked the trail at all, also knows exactly
who Yogi is, and I for one would suspect it might best that you don't be
forgettin' all that's been written here since you posted, 'Don't forget who
you are, Yogi'.  Since you obviously don't know who Yogi is, I'll tell
you.  This is the woman who has taken some notes that she really only
intended to make for one friend one time and, because she was asked to,
refined those notes, re re-searched her research and for several years,
operated at a loss in order to provide the most comprehensive and
up-to-date guide available on the PCT.  Anything else out there was at
that time openly called 'The Book of Lies'.  Be aware that her friends on
this trail are legion, she and her right to copyright will be defended
again and again from Mexico to Canada, whether she makes a profit or not,
if for no other reason than that we can remember when she didn't and she
still kept on researching, revising and reprinting because she knew it made
a difference in the hiker community.  An apology to her would be a smart
move about now if you want to hike this trail in peace .
I've tried for years not to blast any one specific person or topic here, my
biggest failure being alcohol stoves, but in this case I think I'm willing
to state that not only are you just plain WRONG, but that I've come to
notice your email address and I will agree with you on one thing, in my
mind you are indeed 'little'...a very little individual indeed, both small
and small-minded.  Here is where I would normally close with something like
'happy trails', but in this case I'll make an exception, it would be more
apropos to say ' while I like to think I'm the forgiving type I can't be
sure, so you might want to stay out of my way'.

Whew! That would have been horrible. I'm so lucky I never touched it
either. I was so fasciinated by how beautiful they were and I
remember sniffing to see if they were fragrant and walking up to the
prettiest ones to take a picture. It's a wonder I didn't touch any.

I can think of another exception: parent-child partnerships. While it's possible that one might become injured and get off trail, it's not likely that they're going to just "split up" the way that most trail partnerships can...even the romantic ones. Balls never would have taken a step without Sunshine, and neither my dad nor I would ever leave the other behind. :)

Oh Shepherd, that made me laugh!  It would be like an Oregonian transplanting poison oak to their yard for the pretty, shiny red leaves :) I don't know poodle bush personally but have heard enough horror stories about it. I'm so glad your wilderness ethics worked out in your favor - now that is good karma!

I met a guy at Mt. Laguna with a service dog. The dog apparently had
the ability to sense when the man's illness would have a flare-up
thus giving him time to take some medication to prevent it. I don't
remember what he said the illness was. I don't think this gentleman
made it as far as Washington.

Good afternoon!

If you have personally hiked the PCT from VVR to Ebbetts Pass, and can
remember the number of days it took you to go that distance (including
zeros and diversions), please let me know, if you don't mind sharing onlist
or off.  Part of my strategy in setting up trail magic at Ebbetts Pass
again this summer is to follow journals, and to inquire of the nice folks
at VVR what the thru-traffic has been.  That way, I can be sure to choose
my time up there when I will see a good number of hikers, and have enough
supplies to avoid having to shorten my stay.

I already know the mileage, and can do my own speculating about how long it
might take, so real information from past hikers is what I can use best.

Thanks,

Doug

Dona and I plan to hike from Kennedy Meadows to Old Station as our section
hike this year.

The plan is to drive to Kennedy and at some point a friend will get our car
there and move it to Old Station where we would claim it.

Is there a place in Old Station to leave a car for several weeks?

After we get home to Seattle we will be leading PCT trail projects for the
North 350 Blades until the snow flies.

One of my favorite moments on the trail last year (and perhaps...you had to
be there):

I do my best to be kind and respectful to the people I meet along the trail
(and off it, too), whether they are day hikers, thru-hikers, trail
angels...etc., assuming, of course, that they treat me with the same.
I remember being in Mojave, on the balcony of the motel. Looking down, I
waved at the hiker below me on the lawn and said without a trace of the
sarcasm you might expect in the off-trail world, "Good morning, Jackass!"
It's not a sentence one would usually say so pleasantly :)

While doing my volunteer rove here in Redwood parks, I met a family with a
well-behaved dogs. I started to remind them of the no-dogs rule and I
corrected myself and apologized. They said their dog detected signs of
their daughter haveing seizure before any of them was aware and so the
daughter could take appropriated meds. A well justified exception to the
general rule.

Then there are others with dogs who should loose their dogs and pay a hefty
fine. My 2?.
