That is not correct. If you are on National Forest land or BLM land in
California you need a California Campfire Permit for ANY kind of fire,
including any kind of stove.

Since you're from the UK, I should have informed you that you do not need a
fire permit to operate a small backpacking stove to cook your food and
beverages here in the U.S.
