[pct-l] For those that missed Gossamer's Black Friday...

It's a bit of a concern of mine as well. Having a diversity of water
strategies may be an alternative to overloading a backpack, IMHO. I got
my Mariposa in the mail yesterday and have been trying out different
configuratons all day; from my bare bones base load of 16 pounds
(yippee!), to a Sierras / Cascades set-up (regret having the BV500 but
cuts down on resupply trips off the trail, it's worth it), and a Socal
setup.

To take on extra weight when needed, I augmented my Mariposa with a ZPacks
multi-pack http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/backpack_lid.shtml It mates
well as a belly bag and can easily hold a half gallon of water, which
takes about 4 pounds out of the pack and helps as a counter balance as
well, plus I figure I can use it to 'cook' freeze dried food or melt snow
with my body heat as I hike, or use it as a ready bag for rain gear.

I started caching water in certain spots in Socal, yet at most of those
same intersections between asphalt and trail where I have a Trail Angel
had set out may jugs of water. So, perhaps another strategy (in addition
having up-to-date information about water sources), would be to hike just
slightly ahead of the 'pack' come Spring, when those jugs have a better
chance of being full.

cheers,
BF
