100% hands free Umbrella Holder.

I purchased a Walmart unbrella about 5 years ago - less than $10.00
and
removed the handle. The inside of unbrella tube is the same diameter
as
a replacement fiberglass tent pole that I had. I added one of the
metal
connectors to one end and pushed it all the way one so it was flush
with
the end of the pole. I cut it so it is about 1" shorter that the
Unmbrella
wands - as I'm then able to store it inside rolled up.

When the Umbrella is opened I'm able to push about 5" of the pole
into the
Umbrella tube which is stoped by the locking thing when the umbrella
is closed.

I then insert the Tube-Pole into a pocked behind the padded back
support
and the pack body. The pack is attached to the back support on the
sides and bottom but which leaves a 10" opening at the top. The Pack
is a Vapor Trail by Granite Gear - 2006 Backpacker Magazine pack of
the year.

With the extension you are able to adjust the height and it works when
carrying a Bearcan inside the pack. I have used it for both Sun and
Rain.

When not in use just close it up with the extension pole inside and
put the
umbrella into the opening top down.

Does anyone have advice for attaching an umbrella to a pack strap so
you don't have to hold it in your hand? Are umbrellas worth the
weight (1/2 lb) in the desert? Is there too much underbrush to make
them worthwhile in the northwest?
