[pct-l] Southbound from Canada into Washington

Thumper,
You are mistaken. The U.S./Canada border at that longitude IS Monument 78. If you are hiking (I was riding) from the south on the PCT, you will be in Washington/USA until you reach that Monument. That Monument is the official northern terminus of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.  There will be no one there except other PCT hikers. No Rangers - No Mounties. If you want to continue north to Manning park, you will then be in Canada and must have the required permit. When I reached the border I was alone and was setting up my small GorillaPod to get a picture when a hiker walked in who I had passed earlier. He was from Central Finland and had hiked all the way from the southern Monument of the PCT at the Mexican border. We took each others pictures
. He continued north to Manning Park and I rode south to Mazama where I had last parked my rig (camper with horse trailer). If you would like to see my slide show pictures of the border and the magnificent scenery I photographed going north and south from Harts Pass, you can find it at:     postholer.com/stockman     Look for "sticky" and click on the link.
You have a great hike!
And leave no trace.

Meno-Rider Hiker,

I may be off but the Canadian Government recognizes a Canadian portion of the PCT.  It is the 13KM between Monument 78 and the start/end of the trail.  Here is a reference; http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ecmanning/pctrail.html
IMHO - this small portion is part of the PCT.  In fact up until this year the PCTA was issuing permits that included Manning Park for SOBO hikers.  I believe they still do for NOBOs since there is a legal entry process into Canada.

I vote that the Canadian portion of the PCT be included.  And if the community recognized that portion it may add to the argument for a legal entry process for SOBO hikers, just like boaters currently have.

James,
That's unnecessarily complicated. Forget Manning Park - the northern terminus of the PCT is Monument 78. You won't need a Canadian entry permit if you only go to the border. Just park at Hart's Pass and hike to Hopkins lake. (about 23 miles) Next day hike to Monument 78 and then back down to camp at Windy Pass.(about 32 miles).  Next morning hike the 5 miles back to your car. The round trip is only about 60 miles - just three days. Easy, and the scenery is spectacular from both directions.
