Rattlesnakes will freeze and refuse to move as a 1st response to a perceived threat - it's a defensive response - if it doesn't move maybe it won't be seen! I once ran into a red diamondback on Mt Laguna - it wouldn't move until I retreated a bit, stood still, after abt five minutes, it went off the trail and into the brush. They will move if they feel it's safe for them to do so.
