A generally accepted definition of "true" deserts is an area which receive less than 250 millimetres (10 in) of average annual precipitation. Classed as "semi" deserts are areas which receive between 250 millimetres (10 in) and 400 to 500 millimetres (16 to 20 in).
Below are average annual precipitation amounts in inches for SoCal cities near the PCT, compiled from various sources. Looks like there's a lot of "semi" desert out there and some "true" desert. Whatever you want to call it, it's plenty dry for me.
Campo 15.60"
Mt. Laguna 23.40"
Warner Springs 13.86"
Anza 13.42"
Mt. San Jacinto 25.79"
Cabazon 13.59"
Big Bear Lake 21.10"
Wrightwood 25.40"
Agua Dulce 11.26"
Neenach 8.51"
Mojave 6.70"
Tehachapi 11.08"
Onyx 16.67"
If you're out there hiking and it's hot and dry, it probably doesn't matter what it's called.
