I believe that hiking and running both build up the feet. It would be interesting to know if running ultra marathons only (no pack) have as much of an impact on enlarging the feet. I really am not that concerned and welcome whatever changes hiking brings with it---in other words, I am too addicted at this point to care about appearances. Lately I have been running in vibrams with no ill effect, and so believe the feet are meant to develop along with level of activity. In any event, thanks so much for the reply. 'can't quit'

Subject: Re: [pct-l] shoe size
During the past 5 years of long distance running and walking I went from a men's 9 1/2 to a solid 12. They were a 12 when I started my thru hike last year, and grew no more by the end. So I don't think the expansion goes on forever, or maybe it just slows way down when distances become a regular part of your life, but the first several years brought about big changes in my shoe size.
