You probably don't' want to go this heavy, but I've carried a Canon Rebel
for years now. Between last year's thru hike of the PCT, this years re-hike
of WA and years of daily hiking here at home and backpack trips, it probably
has over 6 to 7,000 miles on it and with a big zoom lens, still works like
it was new. I've dropped it on its head several times, had it fall in the
mud and the dust, and it still keeps turning out fabulous pictures. I can't
believe the damn thing still works. For 30 years before this camera I
carried a heavy Nikon and am used to the weight slung around one shoulder.
I trade off mid day often. What I get is a good SLR and terrific pictures.
After seeing Yoshihiro's fantastic and even heavier photo equipment, I
didn't feel so bad. I'm just used to it. When I run the ridges or up and
down our local, Mount Diablo, it just bangs around and seems to be built
strong enough that 5 years of this punishment has not dimmed its optics.
You gotta be crazy to carry this much extra weight, but I "don't leave home
without it."
