One caveat with a gps app on a smartphone - if your phone only receives its signal from cell towers, and if you're somewhere with no cell service, you also are without gps capability .

On the PCT, it seems wise to have gps signal from a satellite(s), rahter than relying solely on cell service, which is frequently absent in remore areas.

Patrick...upgrade your blackberry to an android phone.  Spend $9.99 and buy
the "Backcountry Navigator" app.  You can download USGS Topo maps and
Halfmile's GPS routes and waypoints to it for free (I suggest you donate to
halfmile).  If you carry a cell phone with you anyway then you're adding no
additional weight!!!  Why spend $100+ on a GPS unit -- replaceable "AA"
batteries perhaps?
