Reinhold, I think you've made a serious mistake, which you almost never do. If she
sed the flamethrower on Switchback's "bullseye" fire would not be the
oncern. The resulting gaseous explosion would probably knock pine cones
rom trees for miles around. You have take into consideration the
ollateral damage that the "widowmakers" from Coulter Pine Trees if they
all on innocent hikers. Sorry to make this criticism but just couldn't resist. You err so seldom,
nlike Switchback.

Switchback replies: This is an outrage. This is an insult. This is a slanderous attack. I take great exception to the comment
of a gaseous explosion knocking pine cones from trees for miles around. The explosion would easily knock pine cones off trees
along the whole eastern Sierras. This would start near Kennedy Meadows to al least Toloumne Meadows. No problem.
The PCT would be closed for weeks for the clean-up.

i all, I'm a single female hiking the PCT in 2012 and have had a few
olks recommend I carry a weapon (mainly, a gun). I'm opposed to this,
ut want to get the opinion of other hikers. Would you or do you carry
weapon?

einhold responds:
ellie, a little gun will not stop a grizz or lion....you need something
ith more stopping power.
A ''BAZOOKA'' is much more effective against bears or grizzlies.
Another option, with much stopping power, is a front loading ''CANNON''.
ring at least 10 cannon balls and a large sack of black powder.
eep the cannon loaded at all times and matches at the ready.
Now, with a ''FLAME THROWER'' you will have the most feared infantry
eapon at your disposal.
obody, and I mean nobody, including bears or Switchback want to get hit
y a flame thrower.
he other good thing about the flame thrower....you will not need to
arry a stove, fuel, or pots and pans because the flame thrower will
nstantly BBQ anything you hit.
ou may, however, want to carry a five gallon fire extinguisher to
xtinguish any forest fires you might accidentally start.
So, if you see Switchback running through the bushes with his rear end
n fire, you will know you hit the
BULLS EYE''.
lthough, Switchback is hard to miss, he has a rather good
ized...aahh...uuhh...''BULLS EYE''.
