Yup, McPhee for a good, can't put it down read, on any subject that in an
other's hands could be deadly boring. As for the question of Muir's
writings, they are great, but written in an antique style, almost King
Jamesesque, that captured our nation 120 years ago, in a way that changed it
forever. It's often poetry in prose guise, but thick with words in a way
modern writers are not. Read him slowly, and enjoy his gorgeous verbosity,
but don't expect it to be quick or gripping in the way a modern nature
writer, like McPhee, can be. That being said, My First Summer in the
Sierra, The Yosemite, or The Mountains of California (a compilation of
essays), are all good.
