[pct-l] first night out

I won't say "never bluff with an empty gun", but if you're going to visibly
carry an unloaded firearm (in hopes of deterring the bad guys), be sure it
is a semi-automatic - WITH a clip in the butt - so they'll have to guess if
it's loaded or not. When you point a revolver at someone, they can see 4 of
the 6 chambers in the cylinder. If those are empty, the odds are very good
(1 in 6) that the one poised under the hammer is also empty.

The chipmunks, marmots, and even the bears are not so numerous or dangerous
that you'll need a gun anywhere along the PCT.

If you're worried about people, Counter Assault bear spray is only $45,
weighs 16 oz, open carry is legal everywhere along the trail, and is
non-lethal - both to your target and to you if they manage to take it away
from you and turn it on you. Can't say that with a firearm.
