I found that hiking SOBO took a little getting used to. Here in southern California the trails are well marked. Perhaps even to excess. Not so when starting south bound. I remember going a full day without any trail markers in northern washington. In fact I had several other hikers ask me if they were on the pct. Being adept with a compass and map at least you will know if you are in the right area and headed in the right direction.
