I actually did...this past year! It's easy on the trail...get back into society 
and can't find NOTHIN!

That's an annual occurrence on the AT.  An organic farm somewhere in NY, near 
the Trail, seems to rely on thru-hikers for temp labor.  Also, several hostels/ 
resorts on the AT and PCT will let hikers work for stay, meals, or perhaps 
money.  E.g., Doug's hostel in Lone Pine, VVR, et al.
