Many topo maps now a days are made of a water proof paper. Even if they are not made of this, most paper maps will dry out and will still be readable where as something electronic is pretty much history it it gets a good soaking. One should always have a paper map as backup.

And how water proof are maps especially if not waterproof or in waterproof case?
