Not sure about Ed's services, but Ned's are free as far as he is concerned.  Your travel, gear, snowshoe rental, etc. are your own responsibility.  However, anyone who takes one of his courses is free to donate, just like you are free to donate to one of the other Trail angels who go to considerable expense to help hikers.
