Andrew is asking about section hikes of 5-10 days.  That is not the same as
dragging a dog for 5 months...please give him a break!!!

I was thinking the same thing. I've been pretty vocal in the past about
discouraging thru-hikes with dogs but section hikes in Oregon should be
quite doable. Highlights of things to think about:

1. Your dog can't talk so he can't tell you he's burned out and wants to go
home. Be sensitive and conservative about what you ask your dog to do and
keep a close eye on his body language. If he looks like he's not having
fun, your hike is over.

2. Dogs can't regulate their body temperature as well as humans and they're
closer to the ground, too. On hot days, take afternoon naps or whatever you
need to do to care for your dog.

3. Keep an eye on your dog's pads. Forest duff is easy on a dog's feet but
sand and rock are harsh.

4. Don't take your dog on sections where pets are prohibited.
