I was a "purist" on the first half of my hike, and I'm glad I was.
I listened to music on the second half of my hike. And I'm glad I did.

There is a lot to be said for hiking without any modern "gadgets". I love
it.
But there is also a lot to be said about listening to some awesome techno
while while dance/hiking your way down the trail at midnight under
headlamp. That was pretty cool too.

And during the parts where the trail feels like a long green tunnel, or
during the road walks, music can make the time -- and the miles -- fly by.

I also listened to math and economic lectures on mp3 sometimes (I'm a total
nerd).

I thought it was a lot of fun.

Just be sure to put the ear buds away once in while. The sound of the wind
in the trees is sweet too.
