My ultralight method of scaring bears away consists of collecting several fist sized rocks near me when I go to sleep. If a bear comes to bother me or my stuff, I simply lob a rock high in the air aiming for any rock exposure, such that when it comes down the impact sounds like a gun going off. I once used this to great success camped in the valley above 1,000 Island Lake.
