Crampons or Microspikes are necessary if your choice of footwear has lugs
that can not get sufficient "purchase" on snow with a crusty surface.
Traditional crampons are dangerous in the inexperienced "hands." An ice axe
is necessary wherever you have to walk on snow that is steep. The axe is
used in the uphill hand while traversing as an anchor. You need to learn how
to do this. The axe is, also, used in certain snow conditions to climb up
the slope vertically (not switch-backing) as a self-belay anchor while you
toe-in with your boots. Some say that you will need an axe and spikes as far
south as Mt. San Jacinto through to South Lake Tahoe...
